Reader! Hello. In just over three weeks, my family will embark on a six-week trip, mostly around Italy and Turkey. It's exciting, but we are woefully behind with planning - there are so many things yet to be organised (why is life so crazy?!?). If you've been lately and have any hot tips or things you think are a "must-do-see-eat", then I would love to hear them. Meanwhile, onwards...! Anyhoo, in the world our kids are growing up in, it is very normal for them to be talking, snapping and scrolling simultaneously. Sometimes this is probably fine, but often, it's sending signals they aren't aware of. Helping them recognise this feels important if we want to prepare them for a world in which people won't give them the benefit of the doubt because they already know and love them! I know it's not just the kids, it's certainly something I need to keep working on, so this 2-minute video is worth a watch (with your kids). Ok, so this is a book, not a podcast, but so many people raved about it that I bought it, and it has sat on my bedside table since. Le sigh. I thought I'd pass the recommendation on so you can enjoy it in the meantime! The book is about George Orwell's wife, Eileen Blair, and her influence on his life and his writing—her "invisible life." This book "speaks to the unsung work of women everywhere today, while offering a breathtakingly intimate view of one of the most important literary marriages of the 20th century." Sounds compelling, hey?! Eat Tamarind Caramel Slice by Lara Lee I'm very lucky to count Lara Lee as a friend, not just because she's a wonderful person but because it's meant I've had the good fortune of eating a lot of her delicious food! She baked this slice for a recent dinner, and it was devoured by all. It was so good. 5 stars! Sing along to the Women's World by Okenyo A friend sent me this song the other day, and I *love* it! It's so fun and feels like a good life mantra for me at this particular moment! (I also saw Hamilton for the first time this week - I know, I must be one of the last people on the planet to have seen. Suffice to say, the soundtrack has been on repeat ever since - including as I write this!) Yep, I'm serious. Drink all the water peeps, it's so good for you and none of us drink enough of it. Ok, that's it for this week! If you want to share this issue of The Sunday Five via text, social media, or email (then please do!) Reader! Hello. Happy Monday (or, you know, let’s pretend this landed in your inbox on Sunday night - collective agreement, yeah?!). We are heading off on our trip in two days—yikes (&yipee!)! We are doing one-bag travel, and even though I’d prepped all the clothes we’d need, packing still somehow turned into a full-scale wardrobe overhaul for my teenage boys! So that's what I was doing yesterday, instead of writing to you Reader. Let sigh. Again. So, this week, talk to your kids about...So...
Reader! Hello. So last week, I wrote about how I hadn't nailed it with the intentional conversations with my kids. I hit send on that email, closed my laptop and said goodnight to one of my kids.... who promptly burst into tears, threw their arms around me, and sobbed. It is *so hard* to be a teenager. Life is incredibly confusing and overwhelming, and our kids desperately need us. In recent times, a few people have said to me that their sons aren't interested in talking to them. I am not...
Reader! Hello. When I came up with the five things for this newsletter, life looked a bit different for me. Since then, it's become a little...intense, and it's made me acutely aware that having solid conversations with your kids requires three things: time, emotional energy and intention. This week, I've had the intention and the time but not the emotional bandwidth to act. I've felt grateful for the in-built accountability of writing this email that keeps me focused on my priorities and...
